A 53-year-old man jumped onto the cab of a tractor-trailer Monday afternoon and tried to solicit money, police said.

After being denied cash, Avery Cox fell off the vehicle, breaking both legs, Cpl. Kay Lester with Fulton County police told the AJC. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for treatment, Lester said.

Cox initially told an officer at the scene the tractor-trailer struck him in a hit-and-run on Shirley Road, near Fulton Industrial Boulevard, Lester said. The man later changed his story, she said.

Cox is a "regular panhandler" in the area, Lester said.
