After driving into a pedestrian crosswalk sign and breaking it into pieces, a Cobb County man drove in the emergency and center lanes to elude officers, police said. And that was just the beginning.
Alixsan Mendres Celik, 24, remained in the Cobb County jail late Wednesday. He is being held without bond following his arrest early Sunday. Celik, of Smyrna, faces numerous charges for the incident that began Saturday afternoon, according to his arrest warrant.
Celik allegedly struck the crosswalk sign in his 2004 Chrysler Sebring and then four other vehicles, causing one to roll over, and continued to driving through Smyrna and on I-285, police said.
Officers chasing Celik said he was traveling close to 110 mph while in a 55-mph speed zone on I-285. He allegedly drove in the turning lane and in the wrong direction on South Cobb Drive, police said.
When officers stopped his car, Celik ran away but was later caught and arrested. Celik admitted to police he had swallowed his marijuana so he wouldn't get caught with it.
