Gwinnett authorities are investigating a death that happened in the county jail over the weekend.
Quincy William Franklin, 26, was brought to the Gwinnett County Jail shortly after midnight Saturday on a probation violation. Franklin had been picked up by DeKalb police the night before.
Authorities say Franklin was in a holding cell with two other inmates. He was “still snoring loudly” around 12:37 p.m. -- but when deputies came to remove one of the inmates around 12:52 p.m., Franklin was unresponsive.
Authorities called medical personnel to the jail, and Franklin was given CPR and then taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Gwinnett sheriff’s officials are conducting internal and criminal investigations into the incident, which is standard procedure.
The incident follows one of a local inmate found dead in a southwest Georgia cell. Fabian Avery III, 17, was found dead in his cell at the Pelham Pre-Release Center, March 18. Investigators from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation have traveled to the jail to survey its conditions.
In February, a man charged with killing his wife hanged himself in the DeKalb County jail. Desta Tesfai, 47, was found dead in his cell Feb. 8.
