An autopsy will be performed Monday to determine the cause of death of a man found dead Sunday at the bottom of a swimming pool at his family's Buckhead home.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's office Monday morning identified the man as 25-year-old Whitner Milner.

Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones told the AJC that officers were dispatched to the home on Harris Glen in northwest Atlanta just before 8 p.m. Sunday on a "person injured" call.

When officers arrived, they were told that Milner was at the bottom of the pool, and "appeared to be deceased," Jones said.

It was not immediately known how long Milner had been in the pool.

Milner, whose full name is Gene Whitner Milner III, was a former University of Georgia student. While at UGA, Milner was involved with a criminal case that garnered media attention. In November of 2009, he was charged with false imprisonment and misdemeanor battery after an 18-year-old Clemson University student said he was beaten and held captive in the basement of a fraternity house.

Milner pleaded nolo contendere to reduced charges of misdemeanor battery and disorderly conduct, and was sentenced to two years on probation and ordered to pay $402.02 in victim restitution, the Athens Banner-Herald reported last May.

Milner is the grandson of the late Gene Milner, retired chairman and chief executive officer of Lanier Business Products. The family currently operates Milner Document Products.
