A man fleeing police custody on Centennial Olympic Park Drive was hit by a car Friday, police say.

An Atlanta police officer was transferring a suspect back to the CNN center precinct for processing, Lukasz Sajdak, a spokesman for Atlanta police, said.

While inside the transport wagon, the handcuffed man broke free from police custody and ran into traffic outside Phillips Arena, where he was struck by a passing motorist, Sajdak said.

The man, whose identity has not yet been released, was bleeding from the head and transported to Grady Hospital

The incident is under investigation.
