A Covington man trying to sell a puppy ended up being a victim of an armed robbery, police say.

As first reported by Channel 2 Action News, the 23-year-old man told police he had posted fliers -- including one at the Newton County Probation Office -- stating he had a pit bull puppy for sale. A man contacted him, and the two arranged to meet Wednesday at the Chevron gas station at 2710 Evans Mill Road in Lithonia, a police report said.

Before meeting, the man gave the victim his name and said that he was assigned to a probation officer in Newton County, the police report said.

The victim told police he showed the man the puppy, and then the man reached into his pocket and pulled out a gun, saying, “You think this is a joke. I’ll kill you,” the police report said.

The victim said he stepped back and then ran to his vehicle. He told police he heard the gun go off but was not shot.

The incident was caught on surveillance videotape, according to Channel 2. The tape shows the man trying to take the puppy and then firing a shot at the victim as he was running off.

DeKalb police are looking for the suspect, who they described as black, 6 feet tall with a slim build and wearing a light purple hoodie, “BNG” glasses and armed with an old revolver.

The puppy was not hurt.
