A man shot by a sheriff's deputy died after turning a gun on himself Thursday afternoon in Oconee County.

The suspect, whose name was not released, shot a woman during a domestic dispute before deputies arrived, Chief Deputy Lee Weems with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office told the AJC.

"We don't believe her wounds are life-threatening," Weems said.

Investigators believe the suspect and the woman knew each other because one was previously the landlord and the other a renter, police said.

Deputies were called to Jones Road, near the intersections of Ga. 316 and U.S. 78, around 5:30 p.m., Weems said.

"He had already shot one person before we confronted him," Weems said.

A deputy who confronted the shooting suspect fired a single shot after the suspect pointed a gun at deputies, Weems said. The suspect then shot himself and died at the scene.

No deputies or sheriff's office personnel were injured.
