An 82-year-old Marietta man is in custody Wednesday after police say he beat his ex-wife with a gun and held her hostage in a car over a property dispute.

Police said the incident began Tuesday morning when John William Johnson asked his ex-wife, whose name was not released by police, to drive him to breakfast. Once in the car, he ordered her to pull into the Meineke Car Care center at 3020 Canton Rd. in Marietta, according to Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department.

The police report states that Johnson was upset because the woman had allegedly removed his name from their 28 investment properties without his knowledge, Pierce said. The couple had previously been married for 29 years, according to the incident report.

Once parked at the Meineke around 11:25 a.m., Johnson pulled out and cocked a handgun. The victim told police he threatened to kill her and then himself, but instead, struck her several times in the head with the gun, Pierce said.

The victim tried to leave the Toyota Spyder she was driving, but Johnson grabbed her and wouldn’t let go, police said. Bystanders came to help when she screamed and honked the horn, he said, and police soon arrived.

The victim was treated at the scene and Johnson was arrested. He has been charged with aggravated assault, battery and false imprisonment and is being held at the Cobb County Jail on a $25,000 bond.
