A man was arrested by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s fugitive squad Wednesday after a nearly one-hour standoff involving his 2-year-old son, authorities said.
Benjamin Jimerson, 29, who was wanted in connection to an altercation with a DeKalb police officer, allegedly locked himself and his son in a home in the 500 block of Field Glen Court in Stone Mountain when members of the fugitive squad arrived.
Jimerson was arrested without incident and taken to the DeKalb County Jail after sheriff's negotiators got him away from the child and out of the house, according to a news release from the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.
No one was hurt, Sgt. Adrion Bell said.
Jimerson was arrested in May 2011 on charges of obstruction, two counts of attempting to remove a weapon from an officer, two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree, and marijuana possession. After being released on a $33,000 bond, he was indicted after he allegedly failed to appear in court on the charges on Dec. 27.
In the original incident, an officer responding to an attempted burglary call near Pennybrook Drive saw a parked Dodge Magnum nearby with its hazard lights on, the news release said. Two children and Joyce Malloy, Jimerson's grandmother, were in the car, along with a handgun and marijuana, the officer said.
Jimerson was questioned by the officer after appearing from the nearby wood line, and they struggled when he tried to go back to his car, authorities said.
The officer said he had to use his Taser several times and Jimerson attempted to take it. Another officer arrived and used his baton to try to subdue Jimerson, who allegedly tried to take that weapon, too.
Both Jimerson and his grandmother were arrested and taken to DeKalb County Jail, where they bonded out.
