A Georgia Lottery ball machine malfunctioned during a Cash 4 drawing a week ago, so lottery officials will hold a bonus drawing on July 5.

The lottery still is honoring winning tickets from the June 7 evening drawing, which had a total payout of $92,200 for the winning numbers 3-4-0-9.

But the lottery said in a statement that "one of the balls  ejected back into the chute from the mixing chamber before the winning number fell."

The lottery conducts about 2,000 live drawings every year.

"We are very serious about the security and integrity of our games," said Margaret DeFrancisco, Georgia Lottery CEO. "While we regret that the equipment malfunction occurred, it is reassuring to know that we have procedures in place to identify problems and prevent them from happening again. We believe that giving our players an extra opportunity to win is the fair thing to do.”

The bonus drawing will be held right after the regularly scheduled Cash 4 drawing at 10:59 p.m. on Monday, July 5. All tickets purchased for that evening's drawing will be eligible for the bonus drawing too.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
