Derrick Thomas, principal at Renfroe Middle School longer than anyone in at least a quarter century, announced his resignation Tuesday through email. Thomas has been principal for six years and before an assistant principal at the Decatur school for one year under Bruce Roaden.
“After years of turnover [in the principal position], Bruce turned [Renfroe] around,” Superintendent Phyllis Edwards said. “But it was Derrick who really got the parents involved. We were seeing a big drop-off in parental participation at the middle- school level. Derrick got them in the building and gave them ownership.”
Thomas will finish the school year at Renfroe. He’s accepted the 2015-16 principal post at Henry County’s Eagles Landing Middle, only minutes from his home. Edwards said she’d post the job opening immediately but has no timetable for naming a replacement.
