Lightning sparked a house fire Thursday afternoon in Gwinnett County, authorities said.

Flames were through the roof when firefighters arrived at the home, located on Waters Way in Snellville, shortly after 5 p.m., according to Capt. Tommy Rutledge with the Gwinnett County fire department. Waters Way is located of Bethany Church Road.

The family inside the home heard thunder and smelled smoke, alerting them to the blaze, fire department spokesman Eric Eberly said.

Firefighters quickly controlled the fire and confined it to the attic and an upstairs room, he said. There was moderate damage to the home and the family was not displaced.

No injuries were reported.

Rain and thunderstorms moved through the metro area Thursday afternoon were possible during the evening, according to Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns. There is a slight chance of thunderstorms after midnight, he said.
