A Lawrenceville woman will spend three years in state prison for allowing her elderly father to live in filthy conditions prior to his death.
Maria Cividanes was arrested in July 2008 after a cleaning crew discovered 85-year-old Oscar Cividanes laying on a thinly covered concrete floor.
"There were all types of human filth in him, on him and around the room," said David Keeton, assistant district attorney for Gwinnett County.
There was also evidence that the younger Cividanes had prevented her father from leaving the home the two shared.
Oscar Cividanes died about a week after his daughter's arrest and just days before his 86th birthday.
Last week, Maria Cividanes pleaded guilty to felony cruelty to persons 65 or older, Keeton said. Cividanes was already in jail for failing to appear for a previous hearing, according to jail records.
Superior Court Judge Tom Davis sentenced the woman, Keeton said.
“It was a long emotional sentencing hearing and a difficult decision for the judge, and I trust his judgment," Keeton said.
Maria Cividanes' attorney, Sandra Gerald, did not return a call from the AJC on Wednesday afternoon.
