The Lawrenceville City Council voted recently to increase both gas and electric rates by an average of $10 per month.

“As part of the city’s strategic plan to evaluate fees and services provided to citizens and utility customers, we conducted a review of all our rates and fees, beginning with gas and electric utilities,” said Chuck Warbington, city manager.

The city compared gas and electric rates to those of other municipalities and private marketers offering the same services. In both markets, the city currently holds lower-end market rates. As a whole, the city will still remain lower than all of the major private marketers offering those same services. As an example, the gas base rate of $27 will remain below Atlanta Gas Light’s base rate of $32 before usage charges.

According to information presented at the council meeting, electric fees will increase by a range of a half-cent to one cent per kilowatt-hour depending on usage, and the service charge will increase from by $6 per month from $8 to $14 per month. The city estimates these new rates will result in an approximate $1.4 million increase in revenue for the electric department.

The city plans to continue evaluating fees in other areas including water, zoning and business licensing to name a few.
