A Honda Accord hit the median and ignited on I-75 northbound Sunday afternoon in Clayton County. The driver made it out with only minor injuries before the vehicle exploded, police said.

Three left lanes of the interstate were closed for about two hours in the area near the JCPenney Outlet, Lt. Tina Daniel, Clayton police spokesperson, told the AJC.

The lanes were reopened shortly before 4 p.m., according to the Georgia DOT Web site.

The driver of the 2002 Accord was apparently trying to change lanes at the same as a driver of another vehicle in a different lane, Daniel said. While trying to avoid a collision with the other vehicle, the driver of the Accord overcompensated, and struck the median, she said.

The front half of the Accord was engulfed prior to the explosion, Daniel said. The explosion caused fuel and debris to spill on the highway, she said.
