A 34-year-old man swimming outside a marked swimming area on Lake Allatoona Saturday morning could not be revived after disappearing under water for several minutes, Acworth police said.
It was the second drowning of the Memorial Day weekend. A few hours after the Allatoona incident, 17-year-old Quavante Combs was reported missing in a cove near Burton Mill Park on Lake Lanier in south Hall County.
Rescue workers pulled Combs from the lake after he was under water for nearly 20 minutes, authorities said.
The Allatoona drowning was reported at around 9:45 a.m. at Dallas Landing Park, Acworth police said. Gregory Edelin, of Fairburn, was pronounced dead after being transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital.
The Georgia Department of Natural Resources also reported 14 boating incidents, seven of which included injuries ranging from cuts to broken bones.
Authorities also reported 35 incidents of people boating while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
