A man who was holding a knife to a teenage hostage's throat was shot and killed by a Fayette County sheriff's deputy early Saturday when he refused to drop the knife, authorities said.
Fayette sheriff's spokesman Brent Rowan said deputies responding to a 3:35 a.m. call about a fight in progress at a home on Buckeye Road "encountered a 22-year-old male suspect holding a 17-year-old victim hostage with a knife to the victim's throat."
Rowan said the suspect, whose name has not been released, refused to drop the knife.
After ordering the man multiple times to drop the knife, a deputy fired a single shot, striking and killing the suspect, Rowan said.
The deputy's name has not been released.
The GBI was called in to investigate the incident, Rowan said.
