McDonough police are seeking the driver of an SUV who allegedly shot out the rear windshield of a family's vehicle, endangering its occupants, including three young children, in an apparent road rage incident, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The incident happened about 11 p.m. Easter Sunday, April 8, on Hampton Street (Ga. 20/81) near Phillips Drive in the Henry County city.

“Multiple people could have died, and I doubt [the shooter] even has any remorse, just a random act of violence,” Jonathan Dupre, 20, a passenger in the victim’s Ford Explorer, told Channel 2.

A family of five – a father, mother, and three children ages 1, 3 and 5 – were riding in the Explorer with Dupre and another family friend, an 18-year-old woman, when they ended up following a slow-moving, green or black Mitsubishi Montero Sport SUV, according to a police incident report.

The Mitsubishi eventually stopped, and the father honked, police said. The other vehicle pulled into a side drive and the Ford Explorer passed him.

But then, the Mitsubishi came flying up beside the Ford, and the next thing its occupants knew, the rear windshield of the Ford was shattering.

A bullet struck the Ford and was stopped by the vehicle’s windshield wiper motor. If not for that obstruction, the projectile could have hit one of the children, Channel 2 reported.

The victims did not get the tag number of the other vehicle.

“Honestly, the only thing I can think about is, I’m glad nobody got hurt,” Dupre said.
