A Fulton County school is banning backpacks after a girl was shot in the leg and another student was grazed by the same bullet in a classroom, according to Channel 2 Action News.

The Banneker High School students’ names were not released.

School police responded about 3:25 p.m. Thursday to reports of a “loud pop coming from a classroom,” Fulton County Schools spokeswoman Susan Hale said.

The girl was shot in the ankle in what Hale called “an accidental discharge of a weapon.”

A low-caliber handgun was found hidden in a box in another student’s bookbag, Hale said.

Both students were being treated for “minor injuries,” but Hale did not specify whether they’d been taken to a hospital.

“The investigation into this incident is ongoing and the Fulton County School Police Department plans to file criminal charges against everyone involved in this incident in accordance with district policy,” Hale said.

The incident happened at Banneker High School.
