Two people were killed Wednesday night in chain-reaction collisions on I-20 East in DeKalb County.

A crash involving a motorcycle collected two more vehicles when drivers slowed for the accident at Gresham Road just after 11 p.m.

“The first accident occurred when a vehicle struck the rear of a motorcycle that was traveling east on I-20 in the HOV lane,” DeKalb police spokesman Sgt. J.D. Spencer said. “The driver of the motorcycle was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.”

The motorcyclist was identified by the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s office as 52-year-old Louis ReFour of Snellville.

Then, as vehicles slowed to a stop to avoid the wreckage, a third vehicle was hit from behind and pushed into a median wall, Spencer said.

The passenger in that vehicle, identified as 20-year-old Carri Thigpen of Augusta, died. No one else was seriously injured.

Police took one person into custody in connection with ReFour’s death.

Both crashes are still under investigation.
