More than 150 Carroll County students were out of school Wednesday due to late-winter illnesses.
Out of the 952 students enrolled at Central Elementary School, 159 were out sick. The number of students out sick is about 100 more than on a usual day, school officials said. It’s not all just one bug going around, either.
A letter school officials sent home said fever and nausea have struck some students. Officials said strep throat and flu have struck others.
Student Jacklyn Harden told Channel 2’s Jeff Dore she went to the school nurse Tuesday and saw a long line of students waiting for attention.
"You don't want your child being sick. You don't want them to be at home throwing up, missing school. You know if affects their grades," one parent said.
The letter to families asked them not to send children to school if they have symptoms or have had a fever in the last 24 hours. It said custodians are sanitizing classroom furniture each evening. Teachers are giving frequent reminders to wash hands and cover coughs.
With spring break coming up next week, officials hope the germs will die off and break cycle of children spreading the infection.
