The DeKalb County Police Department handles thousands of car theft cases each year, with 2016 being a year of a slight increase.
By mid-December, the department had worked 3,740 auto theft cases, 43 more than 2015, according to statistics released to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
It was a 1 percent increase, which was the first uptick in the numbers in several years. In 2014, thefts were down 5 percent. In 2015, they were down 4 percent.
In a recent interview, Cedric Alexander, DeKalb’s public safety director, said it’s hard to put a finger on why such stats shift.
