A Newton High School teacher was killed last week when another car hit her vehicle head-on, deputies said.

Nagamani Gorti, 53, of McDonough, was a math teacher, according to a post on the school’s Facebook page.

The wreck happened about 7:30 a.m. Thursday on Brown Bridge Road at Creekside Lane in Covington, according to incident reports from the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

Gorti was driving east when a car driven by 20-year-old Maurice Dillard of Covington crossed the center line, deputies said. Both cars went down embankments after the crash and the drivers were entrapped when deputies arrived, according to the reports.

Gorti was conscious and talking to deputies and was wearing a seat belt, according to the reports. However, medical workers said she became unresponsive as she was taken to Piedmont Newton Hospital, deputies confirmed.

Gorti was pronounced dead at the hospital at 9:20 a.m.

Dillard was unresponsive and unconscious, and he was not wearing a seat belt, deputies said. He was taken to Atlanta Medical Center. His condition is not known.

The school mourned Gorti in the Facebook post.

“Newton High School regrets to announce that one of our teachers, Ms. Nagamani Gorti, passed away in a car accident this morning,” the post read. “Ms. Gorti was a much beloved math teacher at Newton High School. ... Thank you for your support and concern during this very difficult time.”
