A Hapeville man was sentenced to spend the rest of his life behind bars Friday for the 2010 beating and stabbing death of a woman, the Fulton County District Attorney's Office announced.

Mark Birdow, 43, was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, abandonment of a body and weapons charges in connection with the killing of 47-year-old Angela Woods.

Two children found Woods' body, which was wrapped in linens and placed inside a plastic bin, along North Central Avenue on Aug. 28, 2010, authorities said. Relatives had reported her missing 27 days earlier.

Officers canvassing the area ended up at Birdow's apartment after neighbors complained about an odor. Detectives found blood stains and linens that matched the one in which the body was wrapped.

Police said Birdow admitted killing Woods, saying he did so in self-defense. He said he hit her in the head several times with what investigators later determined to be a metal pipe. He also admitted repeatedly stabbing her, police said.

Birdow left Woods' body in his bathtub for several days before discarding it in the container on the side of the road, the District Attorney's Office said.

He was sentenced to life plus eight years in prison after being convicted by a jury.
