The Hampton City Council voted unanimously Oct. 15 to approve an annexation of 1,934 acres west of Hwy. 19/41 near Atlanta Motor Speedway. The overall site includes undeveloped parcels to the west of Hwy. 19/41, north and south of Richard Petty Blvd., north and south of Lower Woolsey Road, and north of the Spalding County line. All the land was zoned RA (residential agricultural) in the county, and the city’s plan was to keep that zoning.

City officials stated that the annexation proceeded using the 100 percent method, which means that all affected property owners requested annexation. While land owners did not request a zoning change, they can legally request rezoning in 12 months.

Cuthbert is the county seat of Randolph County, one of 94 Georgia counties that registered more deaths than births in 2024. The county's hospital closed in 2020, leaving longtime state Rep. Gerald Greene to drivce himself 46 miles to Albany while suffering from a kidney stone recently. (Hyosub Shin/AJC)
