Belita Hamilton, a math and science teacher at Brown Middle School, has been named Atlanta Public Schools' "Teacher of the Year."

The award qualifies Hamilton to represent the city system in Georgia's statewide Teacher of the Year contest, which will be decided later this school year.

A Mays High School graduate, Hamilton is a former athletic trainer who found teaching after she began tutoring students through the Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation. She went back to school to get certified and, in 2003, joined Brown Middle as a teacher. She also coaches the school's cheerleading team.

Evaluators lauded her ability to meet the diverse academic needs of her students by setting high standards and expectations while also fostering an atmosphere of mutual respect.

The system also applauded runners-up for the award: Wanda Brown-Cook of Carver School of the Arts and Leslie H. Tumlin of Warren T. Jackson Elementary School.
