Hall County motorcyclist killed in crash at Charlotte Motor Speedway

A Hall County man was among two people killed in a motorcycle crash at a weekend Vietnam Veterans rally at Charlotte Motor Speedway in North Carolina.

Alan Richard Mockus, 66, of Alto and Thomas Hollingsworth, 71, of Piedmont, S.C., were killed when the motorcycles they were riding collided between turns 1 and 2 of the racetrack, according to WSOC-TV.

The station reported that according to witnesses, the motorcyclists were traveling in opposite direction near the top of the wet track at more then 70 mph, and were trying to come down off the track to avoid one another when they collided.

Mockus’ wife, Deborah, was riding with her husband and was critically injured.

Deborah Mockus is the city administrator and clerk of courts for the small Jackson County town of Arcade, according to the town’s website.

They were among an estimated 60,000 people at Saturday’s “Welcome Home to Vietnam Veterans” event, WSOC said.
