Hall County lays off 32 workers

Hall County commissioners voted to lay off 32 workers, effective Friday morning.

The cuts are necessary to help eliminate an $11.5 million budget deficit, the county announced on its website Thursday evening. The job cuts were required even if commissioners approve a tax increase for the 2012 budget at the June 30 meeting.

Although the new fiscal year begins July 1, the commission decided to release the employees this week to save $24,000, a week's worth of salaries.

Employees being laid off will receive two weeks of severance pay, as well as unused vacation payout.
