A suspect shot by a Gwinnett County police officer Wednesday night later died at a local hospital.
The county Medical Examiner's office on Thursday identified the dead man as 20-year-old Darryl Fuller.
The shooting happened about 9 p.m. outside an apartment complex near the intersection of Singleton Road and Sarah Court, according to Gwinnett police Cpl. Jake Smith
Members of the department's gang unit were patrolling an area "where gangs are known to operate," when three officers saw three suspicious males walking in the center turn lane of Singleton Road, Ritter said.
"They turned their vehicle around to approach the males and found that two of them had walked away," Ritter said.
"The remaining male drew a handgun from his waistband as the officers exited their vehicle," he said.
Ritter said the officers identified themselves as police, and ordered Fuller to drop his weapon.
"The suspect ran onto the sidewalk, turned and pointed his gun at the officers," Ritter said. "One officer fired one shot, which struck the suspect in the head."
Family members told Channel 2 Action News that they don't believe the story police are telling, and have hired a lawyer.
"We'll never get the proper answer ourselves," Fuller's uncle, Tony Williams, told the station. "We are going to let law handle law."
Police on Thursday were looking for the the two men who fled the scene as possible witnesses, Ritter said.
