Gwinnett sheriff endorses Carter for Congressional race
Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway told the AJC on Monday that he is endorsing Liz Carter in the race for Georgia’s Fourth Congressional District.
Carter is one of three Republicans running for the seat, which is currently held by U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson.
“Liz Carter is fully aware of the daily challenges faced on the frontlines of keeping our homes and businesses safe,” Conway said in a statement. “I know that she understands the ever-changing role of public safety personnel at all levels.
Carter, an Atlanta business consultant, said she got to know the sheriff when he implemented the 287(g) program to deport illegal immigrants immediately after arrest. Rockdale and Hall counties are now looking at implementing the program, Carter said.
“He’s had incredible success with it,” Carter told the AJC. “These are people who have drug, manslaughter and other bad charges. He’s working to make our area safer.”
The Fourth Congressional District represents most of DeKalb, along with parts of Gwinnett and Rockdale counties.
Johnson is running for a third term on the Democratic ticket, along with DeKalb County Commissioner Connie Stokes and former DeKalb CEO Vernon Jones. In addition to Carter, retired naval officer Larry Gause and corporate executive Cory Ruth are running as Republicans.
