Crews have been working around unpredictable weather for months to complete construction of the Jimmy Carter Boulevard and Interstate 85 diverging diamond interchange. One of the final remaining pieces of the project was to finalize the bridge’s dramatic uplighting along the outside of the bridge fencing designed to highlight the architectural features.

Now the new gateway bridge will be illuminated every night.

The Gwinnett Village CID funded the exterior bridge lighting and lighting on the center architectural grill which has the capacity to change colors. Lights are also installed on the inside walls of the center pedestrian walkway for safety and aesthetics.

The design was developed by architect Peter Drey, with input from a group of community stakeholders which included residents, commercial property owners and local business representatives. The angular design drew inspiration from the fact that the eastern continental divide runs directly across the Jimmy Carter bridge.
