A 39-year-old Stone Mountain man was sentenced Tuesday to 12 years in prison for enticing a 13-year-old Tennessee girl to travel to his home and have sex with him.
Roger Dale Adkins Jr. pleaded guilty statutory rape and enticing a child for indecent purposes, said Assistant District Attorney Marlene Zekser. Both charges carry a minimum 10-year sentence. However, Superior Court Judge Ronnie K. Batchelor ruled that Adkins can spend the last eight years of his 20-year sentence on probation. Upon his release, he will have to register as a sex offender.
Gwinnett police tracked down Adkins and the victim together at his Major Court residence within a day of her being reported missing in Ocala, Fla., on July 23.
"Once her dad noticed she was missing, he started going through her computer and noticed there had been emails between [Adkins] and she," Zekser said.
The victim left a note telling her family she'd be back in a week. Then she met Adkins at a hotel in Florida and rode to Stone Mountain in his 2005 Ford Taurus, authorities said.
Following Adkins' arrest, the teenager was returned to her mother in Florida.
