Gwinnett police arrested a man who is accused of attacking a woman and stealing her purse.

Marcus Blakeney, 20, of Lawrenceville, allegedly ran away after the incident, which happened Tuesday around 7 p.m., but he didn’t get far, police said. Authorities arrested him the next day after a K-9 unit found a cell phone that he allegedly stole from the victim as well.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the CVS Pharmacy in the 1500 block of Buford Drive, police said.

The victim told police she was about to get out of her car when a man approached her and yelled, “Hey.” He then hit the victim in the face about eight times, police said.

The victim said she tried to climb across the front seat of the car and escape from the passenger's side, but the man reached in and locked the doors, police said.

He then grabbed the victim’s purse and other items and ran off, police said.

The victim went to an area hospital to be treated for her injuries. A Gwinnett police K-9 dog and Gwinnett County Sheriff’s helicopter searched the area for the man.

Police found the victim’s cell phone and were able to find a man matching the suspect's description. They arrested Blakeney on Wednesday.

Blakeney remains in the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond.
