A month after his arrest on child molestation and sexual assault charges, a former band instructor at Gwinnett County's most prestigious high school has been granted bond.

Michael Appelbaum, 41, was arrested April 19 amid allegations that, during the 2011-12 school year, he had sexual relations with a female student at the Gwinnett School of Science, Mathematics and Technology. He's also accused of inappropriately touching another student in 2013.

Appelbaum, who was one of four Gwinnett teachers to be arrested on sex-based charges this school year, had remained in the Gwinnett County jail since his arrest, but was granted a $60,000 bond during a Friday morning hearing.

Gwinnett County Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Tracie Cason, who opposed Appelbaum being given bond, said conditions prohibiting him from leaving the state and having contact with his alleged victims were included in the agreement.

As of 2 p.m. Friday, Gwinnett County jail records showed Appelbaum remained incarcerated.
