Green eyesore near Smyrna to see demise next year

What many call a green eyesore — next to St. Benedict’s Episcopal School near Smyrna — should be demolished by early next year.
The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 5-0 Tuesday to amend the stipulations they had approved in December to allow the school’s expansion to add 100 more students next year.
Now accommodating 280 students, the school is between Atlanta Road and Cooper Lake Road and is overseen by St. Benedict’s Episcopal Church, also on Cooper Lake Road near the East-West Connector.
On behalf of the school, attorney John Moore said Tuesday a church member purchased “the ugly green house” for the school’s expansion. Many years ago, the house was painted this color by the previous owner in retaliation for a county zoning.
The church plans to lease the house and its land with the intention of purchasing the house once finances are approved by “the church hierarchy,” Moore said.
The only concerns were expressed by Mary Rose Barnes of the Oakdale Community Association, regarding increased traffic and an appeal to demolish the green building by February. Moore said the demolition would depend on whether the church could obtain the finances.
If the building cannot be demolished soon, Commissioner Bob Ott, the district commissioner for that area, said he wants the building painted "some other color than green." Information: stbs.org.
