Atlanta firefighters in the right place at the right time quickly knocked down a grease fire at a Cleveland Avenue burger joint Thursday morning.

The fire broke out around 8:15 a.m. at the Checkers drive-in on Cleveland Avenue at I-75.

Atlanta fire Capt. Quincey Watts told the AJC  he and his crew were “going to get some breakfast and a citizen stopped us and said, ‘Hey, I think Checkers is on fire.' ”

Watts said firefighters found light smoke and “a little bit of flame” coming out of the top of the small building. They were already working to douse the flames when they were dispatched to the fire.

“We had probably one of the fastest response times in the history of Atlanta Fire,” Watts said.

The blaze, which began as a grease fire on a burger grill, was quickly put out, and no one was injured.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t real big,” Watts said, adding that the restaurant would likely be able to reopen later in the day. “Like they say at Checkers, ‘You gotta eat.’”
