Grease was to blame for a 2,300-gallon sewage spill near Lawrenceville on Monday morning, officials said.

The spill near Forest Valley Road -- just off Scenic Highway near its intersection with Willow Road -- was reported around 10:20 a.m. Monday, according to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources. It took about an hour and 40 minutes to contain.

"The main cause was determined to be grease, with wipes, paper and other products as a secondary cause," officials said in a news release.

Water resources employees "removed all deposited solids, washed down impervious surfaces and collected runoff," the news release said. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division was also notified.
