Eight nurses laid off last week are the latest cuts at Grady Memorial Hospital to help with an increase in uninsured patients.

The eight nurses, laid off Feb. 12, are among about 700 positions eliminated at the hospital since 2008, Grady CEO Michael Young said Friday. The layoffs will save the hospital about $500,000.

Their duties will now be handled by physicians, Young said.

Young said the hospital treated 60,000 additional uninsured patients last year, bringing the total uncompensated care for 2009 to about $300 million.
