A girl was shot Wednesday night when a fight led to gunfire just steps away from a party attended by numerous children in Marietta, according to police.

Officers were called to the Cinnamon Ridge apartment complex in the 700 block of Franklin Road just before 9 p.m., Officer David Baldwin with Marietta police said. Investigators believe an altercation between two groups escalated to gunfire, Baldwin said.

“The party was an unfortunate backdrop to this violent incident,” Baldwin said late Wednesday.

Both children and parents were outside attending the party at the time of the shooting, which injured an innocent bystander, according to police.

The girl, whose name and age were not released, was transported to WellStar Kennestone Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Baldwin said.

“I imagine this was probably very traumatic for the party-goers,” Baldwin said. “They were out here just having a good time.”

Two people were detained, Baldwin said. They were not attending the party and their names were not released late Wednesday.

Residents of the complex looked on as officers investigated the shooting, which happened near an inflatable bounce house set up in the parking lot for the party.

“The Marietta Police Department is going to work hand-in-hand with this community,” Baldwin said. “Our primary goal is the residents’ safety.”
