A North Georgia school system has called off classes for Thursday and Friday, citing “the elevated number of absences among students and adults due to sickness,” according to its Facebook page.

Walker County officials offered no further details, but several school systems in the nearby Chattanooga, Tenn., area also cancelled classes some days this and next week, the Chattanooga Times Free Press reported.

Those systems cited a surge in flu-like illnesses, the newspaper reported.

“We are experiencing difficulties finding coverage for our classroom teachers as well as our bus drivers and attendants,” the Walker County post said.

“The safety of our students is always our number one priority. We hope this separation from one another will allow for proper care and wellness for all students and adults.”

In the Chattanooga area, Bradley, Marion and Monroe county schools will be closed the rest of the week, the Times Free Press reported.

Farther north in Knoxville, Tenn., the Knox County system was closed Tuesday and planned to reopen Thursday, according to the newspaper.
