Georgia players made a strong, but not a lasting impression, in poker’s biggest event.

The Main Event of the World Series of Poker was down to its final 64 players -- from a field of 6,494 -- when play resumed this afternoon.

Georgia’s last four players were eliminated Monday. Clayton Newman of Athens finished 68th, earning $90,344, and Brent Catalano of Atlanta finished 76th, earning $68,979.

Joel Patchell of Atlanta (107th) and Edward Teems of Trion (135th) each took home $40,288.

Other Georgians who cashed: Kenneth Harbaugh, Atlanta, 273rd, $32,963; Allen Kennedy, Valdosta, 290th, $29,911; Stan Sinclair, Douglas, 422nd, $27,469; Jerry Connor, Tifton, 461st, $25,027; Robert Mobley, Marietta, 568th, $23,196; and Clarence Willingham, Waycross, 584th, $21,365.

Tournament organizers expect the field to be whittled to a final table of nine by late Wednesday night. The final table won’t be played until Nov. 7, with the winner taking home $8.5 million along with the prestigious bracelet.

Currently, Darvin Moon, a logger from Maryland, is the chip leader with 9.7 million. Feared poker pro Phil Ivey ranks third with 6.3 million.

In the 2004 Main Event, Atlanta poker pro Josh Arieh finished third and took home $2.5 million.

In 2022, Georgia Power projected its winter peak electricity demand would grow by about 400 megawatts by 2031. Since then, Georgia has experienced a boom of data centers, which require a large load of electricty to run, and Georgia Power's recent forecast shows peak demand growing by 20 times the 400-megawatt estimate from just three years ago.
