The holiday season is essentially over. Time to go back to work. Commuters are already filling the highways just in time to find that the price of gasoline has gone up.

Happy New Year.

The average gas price in Georgia as reported by AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report is now $2.53 a gallon. That's roughly 8 cents (.079 to be exact) higher than the average price of regular gas a week ago, the AAA says.

There is some good news: Georgia's gas prices are below the national average, according to AAA's fuel report. Nationwide, the average price of a gallon of regular gas is $2.66.

Gas prices have been climbing steadily since early last year, figures from the AAA show. In Georgia, the price of regular gas on Feb. 1 2009 was around $1.83 a gallon. It hit a high of about $2.50 a gallon on June 1 before sliding back about 15 cents for a couple of months.
