Georgia city weighs crackdown on kids driving golf carts

Police in a northeast Georgia town are considering regulating the use of golf carts out of concerns that children might be hurt driving them on city streets.

Jefferson city officials tell The Athens Banner-Herald that golf carts have become a popular way for children and adults to get around some of the town's subdivisions.

Police Chief Joe Wirthman says officials are going to address the issue before someone gets hurt. He said the golf carts provide little protection on city streets.

New rules being considered would require golf cart drivers to be at least 16 years old and to stay on city streets with speed limits of 35 mph or less. Council members plan to discuss the matter at a Jan. 24 meeting.
