The man shot by two Austell police officers Sunday morning first wrestled a Taser from one of them and delivered multiple shocks, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said.

According to an emailed statement attributed to GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian Whidby, Austell police responded to the home on Whitewater Court at about 10:25 a.m. after receiving a domestic disturbance call. A tussle ensued when a man at the home “became combative toward the officers.”

Somehow, the man managed to take a Taser from one of the officers. The man, whose identity was not released Sunday, then fired the Taser and struck the officer multiple times, Whidby said.

Two officers fired their guns and hit the man, who “continued to attack the officers” and refused to drop the Taser, Whidby said. He was eventually subdued by Austell and Cobb County police officers and taken to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

“Multiple officers” were also sent to the hospital for treatment but were later released.

No further information was immediately available.
