Two men are facing charges after an officer-involved shooting outside a late-night party in Norcross.
According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the shooting occurred between 12:30 and 1 a.m. Monday when Norcross police responded to a disturbance call at 5521 Brook Hollow Parkway. When an officer arrived, he saw a man, later identified as 25-year-old Dwight Jones, discharging a firearm. The officer returned fire.
"As a result of the incident Rolandus Bailey, 24, and Darnel Hamilton, 23, who were in the area, were shot," GBI spokeswoman Sherry Lang said in an email.
The men were taken to Gwinnett Medical Center to be treated for their injuries, she said.
Jones was arrested and charged with one count of aggravated assault on a police officer and one count of aggravated assault. Another man, 25-year-old Aaron Zachary, was arrested on a probation violation warrant.
Channel 2 Action News previously reported that the incident began when a fight broke at the Fusion Event Hall. Two off-duty police officers working security at the hall called for backup, and as several police units arrived, a gunman in the parking lot of a nearby Waffle House fired several shots toward the Knights Inn motel next door, hitting one person.
“As he approached the Waffle House, [one of the officers] could see someone in the parking lot shooting at someone,” Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers told Channel 2.
That officer returned fire, according to the news station. The officer is on routine paid administrative during the investigation.
The GBI investigated the shooting at the request of the Norcross Police Department. Lang said the incident remains under investigation.
