After a spike last week as Hurricane Irene threatened East Coast oil refineries, Atlanta gas prices have started falling, according to a website that tracks how much we pay to fill up our tanks.

Metro Atlanta’s average price early Monday of $3.56 for a gallon of regular unleaded was a penny cheaper than on Sunday, and 4 cents below the national average.

Prices had been generally dropping this month before the price climbed late last week to $3.57, according to atlantagasprices.com. August began with prices averaging about $3.76 a gallon in metro Atlanta.

The lowest prices reported by the website early Monday were $3.36 at warehouse clubs around town, and $3.37 at several gas stations in the Cartersville area.

The steepest price was $3.99 a gallon at a BP station on Peachtree Road in northeast Atlanta.

Statewide, the lowest price reported was $3.22 at a Sam’s Club in Macon.
