A judge found the state in contempt of court for allowing the Cobb County Animal Control shelter to continue using gas chambers to euthanize pets.

When an animal is euthanized at the shelter, its cage goes into one of two stainless steel gas chambers.

Homer the cat, who is up for adoption, has the run of the facility.

Glenda Ott, Cobb's animal control supervisor, gets a kiss from Toby, a 9-month-old dog up for adoption. Toby has been neutered and is housebroken, Ott says.

An 8-week-old kitten awaits adoption. Last year, nearly 6,000 cats and dogs were killed in Cobb County.
