The Forsyth County mother whose 4-year-old twins became extremely ill earlier this week and her live-in boyfriend now face additional charges, police said Friday evening.
In addition to drug charges, 29-year-old Laurel Corrine Gray now faces charges of reckless conduct, hindering the apprehension of a fugitive and tampering with evidence, said Capt. Tim House with the Forsyth County Sheriff Office. Her boyfriend, 28-year-old Michael Robert Conley now faces reckless conduct and obstruction charges.
The two boys, whose names have not been released, were taken by ambulance to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta on Monday with unknown illnesses, according to House. One of the boys has since been released, but the other remained in critical condition Friday, House said.
After the boys were transported to the hospital, deputies could not locate Conley, who did not return phone calls, House said Friday. Gray is accused of giving cash to Conley.
“She provided monetary assistance to him while he was on the run, therefore hindering the apprehension of a fugitive,” Sheriff Ted Paxton said in a statement Friday.
Gray allegedly destroyed some of the evidence in the home, Paxton said.
Sheriff's deputies executed a search warrant later Monday at the family's home on John Burruss Road in North Forsyth County. Inside the home, deputies found marijuana and evidence of drug distribution, Paxton said. Additionally, investigators found unsecured medications that were not prescribed to the couple, Paxton said.
Gray was arrested Tuesday evening and charged with two felony drug counts and a misdemeanor obstruction charge, Paxton said. Conley, who is not the father of the children, was also arrested on drug charges. Both were booked into the Forsyth County jail.
Gray's bond has been set at $28,655 and Conley is being held on $28,980 bond.
Despite the arrests, authorities have not uncovered the source of the illnesses, Paxton said.
"We don't know what they've gotten into," House said.
Doctors have run a variety of toxicology tests on the boys, House said. Evidence taken from the home has been sent to the GBI crime lab for evaluation, he said.
The twin who has been released from the hospital, along with a younger sister, were both placed in protective custody following the arrests.
