Former DeKalb top cop's lawyer quits

Former DeKalb County Police Chief Terrell Bolton will have to find a new lawyer to represent him in his suit against the county.

Bolton’s lawyer William McKenney filed a motion in DeKalb Superior Court to withdraw as the former chief’s lawyer.

“There are some financial issues that have arisen,” McKenney told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “I still think there are some merits to the claim, but I will be unable to argue that at the hearing.”

He declined to elaborate on the financial issues.

It is unclear if Bolton has hired another attorney. No attorney is listed in court records and Bolton did not return calls to his Dallas home. An attorney for DeKalb said he had not been notified of an attorney change for the chief.

DeKalb CEO Burrell Ellis fired Bolton last year, accusing the chief of insubordination, misuse of county property and acts unbecoming of an officer. Bolton sued the county after a hearing officer rejected his appeal. He is scheduled to be in DeKalb Superior Court on May 10 for a motion to dismiss the suit.

In March, an appeals board upheld the Georgia Department of Labor’s decision to deny unemployment benefits for Bolton.
