Students at one Gwinnett County school celebrated their principal's birthday in a very surprising — and altruistic — fashion.

The children at Rock Springs Elementary School secretly collected more than 1,300 food items and donated them to the Lawrenceville Co-op, Gwinnett County schools officials said.

“It was such an honor," Principal Penny Clavijo said in a news release, "for our students to participate in a service project to celebrate my 50th birthday, and especially to support the Lawrenceville Co-op, which is an organization that helps feed and support families in Lawrenceville."

Rock Springs Elementary is on Rock Springs Road in Lawrenceville.
